My New Author Photo

I am extremely camera shy…I don’t like to be in photos, even as background to random tourists in Chicago snapping away. I knew I needed an author pic, but I always thought, “I’ll just wait until I get an agent,” then it was, “I’ll just wait until I get a book deal,” and with that final event come and gone, I couldn’t put it off any longer. I wanted to, but my editor needed a photo for the catalogue.

So, this is what I look like J Please be kind. And thanks to my fantastic friend Lucky for taking the photo.

What about you guys, do you already have your author photo or are you like me and putting it off until the last possible moment?

  1. i hear you on the camera shy... i bear a striking resemblance to weird al sometimes! eeks!
but if i were GORGEOUS like you are (not meaning to be creepy- just honest!) i wouldn't be nearly as camera shy! :D

  2. I can't stand having my picture taken. I always make a weird face. And I can't imagine needing an author photo for many many years, so I'll just keep putting it off as you did. :)

  3. aspiring_x - That is so nice of you to say...I honestly wasn't fishing for compliments but thanks!

L.G. - I feel like I always have that "deer in the headlights look" and I can't get over the ten extra pounds the camera adds...it really does! Stupid camera (grumble, grumble).

  4. I avoid the camera too. Even taking and picking a picture for my blog was a big, embarrassing deal to me.

But yours is a great pic! I love the brick background, though I think I like the facebook closeup better than the one above.

  5. Demitria, it's beautiful! I love it and yes, I'm like you. I don't particularly like having my picture taken (hence the camera-phone one on my blog that I took myself LOL!) Love it and am absolutely loving hearing your progress. I had no idea you had written an post-apocalyptic (that's what my most recent WIP is, a contemporary dystopian but. . . no zombies LOL).

  6. Jennifer - I like the lots of brick...but my editor did say they would probably crop it...so it probably will end up looking more like the facebook one to the right.

  7. Lindsay - You took that with your camera phone? It's really great! Impressive camera-phonetography.

  8. You are beautiful! Seriously. And you have gorgeous hair. I'm not a fan of getting just MY picture taken. I'd rather have it be a family picture or something. Anyway, I love the picture. You shouldn't be shy at all! :)

  9. I think this is a fantastic author picture. I took my own picture for my author picture. True, not very professional, but I tend to smile like Chandler from Friends when someone else tries to take my picture. I'm a bit phobic about it.

  10. Well that's just gorgeous.

I'm not camera shy as long as I'm wearing makeup and my hair is done and it's after 10am. Catch me without any of those things and I become a monster.

  11. Not many like the way they look in photos especially me. LOL However, I bit the bullet and had many photos taken for the back covers of my books. I hate the photos but what's a girl to do.
    Your photo is beautiful.

  12. Love it! Great, simple photo. I don't mind having my pic taken (check out my hobby--living history--and you'll know why...had to get used to it. I'm in so many people's vacation photos that my picture has probably traversed the globe).

This is a great photo, though--so often I feel like shy writer-types are hiding in their photos--this one is sleek and professional :)

  13. Seriouisly? You say be kind? You are a beautiful young woman.

For my newly released book I used a book that my daughter took six years ago that epitomizes the cowboy feeling of my poetry

  14. I'm afraid I will just have to remain a woman of mystery. I don't do photos. Sometimes, honestly, I think author photos can hurt you.

Not you, though, trust me. This is a lovely photo and you should be proud of it. I would crop the top a little so there is less brick then you would be more the subject instead of sharing the limelight with the brick. Sorry, my son is a photographer and I've learned a few things from him.

  15. Thanks guys! When I try to download this as my profile pic, it comes out all blurry. Any idea why or how I can fix that. I'm sure most of you are more tech savvy than me :)

  16. I love it! You don't look posed, or like you think you're smarter than the rest of the non-writer world.

If I ever have to have an author photo, I think I'll have a cartoon.

  17. Last possible minute. You look great though.

  18. How can you be camera shy when you take such a lovely photo? I'm sure your editor was thrilled.

  19. Lovely photo indeed (and lovely blue blouse - it's your colour!) but it would be even better if you weren't so obviously self-conscious. I always try to think about something nice while somebody takes a photo of me. I am also camera shy but sometimes it works.

  20. With regard to 'blurry', it depends on the type of file the photo was saved as. If your original picture is not blurry, then something is obviously happening during the upload. If the original picture is too small, depending on where the picture is going to end up (bigger, for example) it will look blurry. Pictures whose files sizes are small, will look blurry when they are stretched or made larger. You have to start large because you can always crop it down without compromising quality.

  21. That's a great photo! You look great in it. :)

  22. I am someone who's camera shy myself...but I don't see why you should feel conscious at all...you look beautiful...

  23. Wendy, thanks for the advice...I'm not sure what the problem was but I tried from a different computer and everything worked out.

  24. You’re adorable! I love the pose, colors, and background. Me, no photo, nope.

  25. No reason for you to be camera shy--you look great! I like the contrast of the brick wall behind you. Very nice.

  26. Very lovely choice of outfit for the photo. You definitely have nothing to be shy about. Nope, I don't have a photo. I'm not too much into having my pics taken, and that's why my dog is my siggy. :P

  27. Your photo's great Demitria! I tend to look crap in photos, even if I'm feeling awesomely beautiful that day :P Guess I'm just not photogenic!

  28. Your picture looks really nice! Exactly the kind of set-up I'd want for my author pic. But I'm definitely going to be like you and put it off as long as possible. Having someone stand there taking pictures of me is probably the most uncomfortable thing I can imagine!

  29. That author photo is lovely but I must say, you are a gorgeous woman.

  30. It's a good one!

I tend to be the person behind the camera taking the picture, so I'm rarely in photos.
