I would disagree with the suggestion regarding adding a rhetorical question, just due to all of the twitter conversations and blog snippets I've seen where agents poo-poo that, but perhaps that's simply personal preference. I think Becky's query is shaping up lovely. Makes me curious!!Lindsay N. I agree with Demitria's comments about most of the query, but I've noticed a few agents specifically say that like a personal greeting right at the beginning (explaining why you're contacting THEM specifically for the project). It's all about researching agents' personal preferences I guess.

Good luck, I hope your book finds a home - I'd like to read it!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09589928734405169231noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751321921235259477.post-54902288460622428612011-01-17T14:24:44.186-08:002011-01-17T14:24:44.186-08:00That's actually been one reason I haven't ...That's actually been one reason I haven't openly posted a synopsis- it's really only been seen by one other person- it would give away details I don't want the general populace seeing about the book.William Kendallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00331324250821836822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751321921235259477.post-32118706576941421482011-01-17T10:45:31.388-08:002011-01-17T10:45:31.388-08:00Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I think it's...Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I think it's important to have a query "format" and then personalize that format. For my query, I stated the name of my book and genre right away, then I mentioned the name in the middle, and the name and the word count at the end. As long as you have all three things, you need to do what will work best for your query.

I also put the ending of my book in my query...that's why half of it is missing in the post on this blog. I thought it was important for the agent to know how it ended, but I wouldn't go telling the general populace all my secrets :)Demitriahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11597317699857591880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751321921235259477.post-11341386024813773532011-01-17T09:07:51.488-08:002011-01-17T09:07:51.488-08:00I thought you always wanted the word count and gen...I thought you always wanted the word count and genre/age group at the end. Agents are usually very busy and they have to read tons of such texts every week - they might be grateful for making the job a bit easier for them.

There is one detail I would add to your query, though.

I like ending summaries of the books I review with a rhetorical question. It is a good way of creating suspence and making the reader (Agents are also readers) more curious.
I think it would make your query a bit more interesting if you used it the text as well.

For example here:

Neither are appealing options, but Sam is desperate and running out of time. Will he manage to overcome all the difficulties? What will he really learn in the process?Anachronisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10398058819007642332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751321921235259477.post-13216210270203008492011-01-17T08:14:33.906-08:002011-01-17T08:14:33.906-08:00Thanks for the help!
